SALEM: Members of United Communist Party of India (UCPI), Salem district, staged a demonstration as a part of the State-wide stir here on Monday protesting against the stiff increase in the prices of essential commodities. The cadres, led by its secretary S. Mani, carried placards condemning the State and Central governments for the price increase. They pointed out that inflation, power shortage, petrol and diesel price increase had led to multiple social problems, which affected the people at grassroots level badly. They further said that the wrong policies of the Central government had led to such problems. On the State front, they pointed out that the vacancies in government offices should be filled up. The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme should be used to create water sources for agriculture. All the tanks, ponds and water-carrying channels should be desilted. The sanitary workers should be given free house site pattas and houses for them should be built. The agriculture produce should be procured by the State itself. Dal should be given at the rate of 2 kg instead of the present one kg under the public distribution system. New ration cards should be issued to those who had no cards. The drinking water problem must be resolved on a war-footing. The dedicated water supply scheme for Salem city must be implemented immediately.
